Today’s bowl from a board was made from hardwood butcher block countertop made with reclaimed hardwood pieces from pallets and skids.

This bowl is 10 1/2” wide and 2 3/4” tall, and has an initial coat of 50:50 tung oil to citrus oil solvent.

Two more, a 14”x4” “bowl from a board” from hard maple butcher block countertop, and a 10”x4” from acacia butcher block:

I really like the acacia. And its colors “pop” once oiled more than any other wood I’ve worked with so far. Which admittedly is limited lol

Love to see art expressed with wood. Very talented to do that.

Candy dish and pens for a local college’s admissions office, from part of a log from an old large walnut tree they took down in October for an office addition.

    Thanks!

I'm on several Facebook wood turning groups and posted this there and even some of the professional turners have remarked about it, I think because of the shape and figure of the walnut.

Honestly I was most worried about that scalloped edge. I had never attempted anything like it. I laid out the design on graph paper with a mechanical pencil, drew the arcs with a protractor, cut out the shape, taped it to the walnut, drew an outline and cut that out on my bandsaw. The individual scallops took a LOT of hand sanding. None of that could be done with my lathe.

I wondered about the scallops. They really set off the piece and make it unique.

15 1/2” x 6” bowl from a board, from a walnut 1 1/2” thick butcher block countertop cut off a local craftsman gave me. Initial coat of 50:50 tung and citrus oil applied to the exterior.

This walnut butcher block countertop is hard to find and very expensive so I was thrilled when I was given two pieces. I love working with walnut and I love making bowls from boards from butcher block material, so a walnut butcher block bowl is a definite highlight for me. And this one doesn’t disappoint.
