I'm glad you posted to this thread Machria. I keep forgetting about it. I have a couple of nice stumps I sitting outside that I am now going to bring inside to let dry further. One is a nice big Elm stump. All the bark is off it already. So I'm going to bring that in the heated basement and let it dry some more. Then make something out of it. I have lots of material for stuff like this and would like to get into doing some stuff like Snafu2 to make some money for taxes and the like. Thanks for the thread Snafu2. Good one!
I think Nate was banned from the site just like MikefromMaine can't private message either one or even look at the profile page
I've had this knot from a cedar alongside my parent's dock for nearly fifteen years! It's a small piece, but beautiful figuring. Any suggestions or thoughts if it was yours(that is, anyone who sees these pics)? Pencil caddy seems like a HUGE waste on this little gem... Come on, help a guy out and I'll show y'all the coffe table! Thanks a bunch, Eric VW BTW great work you've done Snafu2! I like the other "natur-niture " too, guys!
I've got a few pieces of burlwood from a maple tree I recently cut up. Is there a market for selling it somewhere? I saw somebody on TV selling a little piece for a couple hundred bucks a while back.... That cedar piece looks great!
Good ideas! Anyone else? Thanks Machria, I've cut burls for a wood turning neighbor of my parents. I'll post some of his work in a bit. Thanks PullinMyPoulan for the suggestions. I've got 2 pieces of pecan in the solar kiln, one looks like it'll make a nice end table like mdavlee's pic. The other one can only be described as "needs to be seen!" My father/son built coffee table pics tomorrow?! Y'all stay warm- when I figure out how to put a weather ticker in my sig, y'all will know it's cold here too! Eric VW
I don't know how you would do it but there has to be a way to make a little storage/box out of it. Something like these?
Hey yooperdave, I've had similar thoughts about this cedar knot.... Might have to take a hard look. I would make something for my wife, but(& I consider this one of the higher ranking reasons for marrying her!) she doesn't really wear much jewelry beyond wedding/engagement rings, a pair of earrings, and a necklace! She don't want no more than that! Of course, it doesn't have to be for jewelry, that's just what I think when I see a small box like that... Maybe the lamp idea, with a secret compartment in the knot? IDK... Since joining the forum so recently, all I want to do with my free time is hoard fire wood Eric VW
Snafu2: Very crafty! I've always wanted to take a large girth log and cut a 3" slice on the diagonal to create an oblong dining table. Something with a beautiful grain, leave the bark on... Eric VW: You could always make a jewelry/treasure box and give it as a gift or sell it. Should fetch at least $50 - $100
I really those stump tables you made.... Nice stuff for sure! I have a couple slab tables and a bed...
Well you can get a thin coat in about 1-2 coats I like a thick glass look so I do like 5-6 coats lot of factors come in to play Things like low spots cracks bug holes I am now so to say painting the reisn on the sides of the logs with a foam brush to make it look like it's covered in glass I am just about to clear coat a clock waiting on the stain to dry fully
I was curious to how you fastened the bed rail to the head board and the foot board? Did you use standard bed frame hardware and if so where did you get it from? LOVE IT
Used real heavy duty hardware, so the bed can be disassembled easily. The rails were made from one 2.25" x 16" walnut slab sliced in two so both rails would be similar. Live edge faces up.
