There is no oak in the rockies, unless its nurtured in someones landscape. I always heard oak was the best and wanted to burn some. Guess I didn't miss out, thanks barf. Edit, I should have said thanks vomit.
My stove had a load of dead standing red oak last night @1.5yrs(two summers), no moisture bubbles here
Sometimes the bubbles are very brief but if it does that for quite awhile throw it back in the stacks!
Well, that cinches it then. I'm gonna' burn up all my Oak so I don't have that problem. Thank you for saving me.
Hey BV-hang in there! Just grab a little deeper from the pile and give that "stupid oak" a little more time. You'll change your opinion of it by then.
I'm not a big fan either. If we weren't running out of ash around here I would never pick up oak unless it was given to me. It's usually good after two years if split smallish, three or more if it's split large. I split some red oak a couple years back on the big side(8x8 squares) I have no idea when that stuff will be ready. I may end up splitting it down at some point to help it along. One thing I have noticed with oak is it will absorb some rain water into the ends. When this is the case you will get some water out of the ends but it's quickly burned off. I've split pieces that checked out at 20% or less and they still put some water out of the ends. Pretty frustrating stuff!
You guys are scaring me. I've gotta burn White Oak this year. It's been stacked 3 summers on pallets, two rows with a little space between 'em. Some of them are split medium-large. Then I've got some Red that's been stacked 2 yrs. but split a little smaller. I guess it's time to get out the meter. If it was just for me, I've got enough other stuff around that I know is dry, some White Ash, BL and Cherry. But I've gotta feed the Big Buck, too. With the White Oak is some Pignut, about 2 cords....that's gotta be good by now. Most of this wood except for a little of the White Oak, was dead standing so I gotta think I'm OK. I've gotta stack a bunch of Red this winter, and it will only get 2 years...better not make the splits too big.
Thinking the same thing Woody. I've been splitting a lot of the Oak bigger than normal, and it may get used in 2 years....or not. Might be splitting it down a bit.
